 FUTURE EQUITY: Dunedin Housing

Speaker: Campbell McNeill, Director - AHHA Architects

Ōtepoti Dunedin, like many cities around the world, is facing a housing crisis. Housing prices have skyrocketed, making it difficult for many people to access a home. This is putting a strain on the health and wellbeing of the community due to a number of reasons including overcrowding, unhealthy environments, displacement, and financial stress. The economic backbone of the housing market is broken, this talk sets out a plan to show an alternative solution which sits alongside the current property market, acting in parallel to deliver perpetually affordable housing and amenities in Dunedin.

The Ōtepoti Futures Trust was setup to benefit the community by acquiring, owning, maintaining, and developing land and buildings to provide residential housing and associated community facilities and premises for the use and benefit of people residing in the Dunedin Region. Campbell McNeill from ahha Architects helped set up the trust and is going to be talking about how implementing a parallel housing market is an opportunity for Dunedin to take a big step towards solving its housing crisis making the city more affordable, liveable, and equitable.

This series is in partnership with Dunedin Public Libraries and Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga, and happen on the last Wednesday of each month.
