Flames, Names, and Automobiles: the history of the Angus Motors Building

Speaker: David Murray, Hocken Collections

Parts of the Angus Motors Building in Princes Street are 150 years old. Its story begins with a massive fire in 1874 and the construction of its oldest portion as the Spanish Hotel. The talk will explore personalities associated with its early years, including proprietors Olegario Guardiola and Albert and Jane Leung Chung, and resident poet Thomas Bracken. Part of the building was erected for the Bell Tea factory and in the 1930s the site was radically transformed for the motor trade.
