Visions for Dunedin: Our Heritage, Our Future

Historic Hobart: Lessons for Dunedin

Speaker: Jo Galer, Southern Heritage Trust spokeswoman

The city of Hobart in Australia is a doppelganger city for Dunedin in many ways. Hobart is also built around a harbour, situated at the southernmost end of Australia, and not imbued with the warmest climate. Hobart has the most concentrated amount of built heritage of any city in Australia. Sound familiar? Yet the way Hobart has turned their heritage to their economic advantage is vastly different from Dunedin. What lessons can Dunedin learn from Hobart, and where in Dunedin are lessons from Hobart already being applied? How do we reinvent ourselves within the New Zealand context?
