Quarantine Island/Kamau Taurua Tour

25 Oct 2025, 9:30 am – 3:30 pm

Back Beach Port Chalmers boat transfer, Back Beach, Port Chalmers, Dunedin 9023, New Zealand

Join the QI/KT Community Welcome Day and discover what happened to materials from the 1925 International South Seas Exhibition.

There will be a talk about materials used from the exhibition, most of which can be viewed. You will also be able to see the restored Married Quarters, Aotearoa/ New Zealand’s only two-storied wooden quarantine building, which remains on its original site. This is the last remaining building of the 1870′s quarantine station, a prominent two-storied building that once housed families in quarantine. The restoration project was awarded The Southern Heritage Trust 'Dave Cox Memorial Award' in 2019.

The QI/KTC charity owns and manages the buildings and the jetty, and leads the ecological and historical restoration on the Island under an agreement with the Department of Conservation.

Boat transfers depart Back Beach Port Chalmers 9.30am; return 12.45pm or 3.30pm (Portobello pontoon transfers available on request approx. 9.40am, with returns at 12.45pm & 3.30pm).

Stay a few hours, or the whole day!
