New light on past history: recent works at First Church

15 Oct 2025, 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm

First Church of Otago, 415 Moray Place, Central Dunedin, Dunedin 9016, New Zealand

A short talk by heritage stonemason Andrew Barsby on the recent repair work at First Church, some background history, and an interesting discovery.

During the first six months of this year, the interior of First Church was full to the ceiling with scaffolding. A major upgrade in lighting, heating and fire protection took place, as well as significant repair works to the West Transept.

Fabric was uncovered for the first time since 1890 revealing an interesting change of design from Architect Robert Lawson's origin plans.
