Discover the extraordinary story of Mataatua Wharenui — the great ancestral house built by Ngāti Awa in 1875, taken from its people for over a century, and finally returned to Whakatāne in 2005. This presentation offers an opportunity to hear from composer Dame Gillian Whitehead, producer Tessa Petersen, and performer Michelle Walker, as they reflect on the transformative partnership that brought this history to life through the new opera The Journey of Mataatua Whare: The House That Came Home.
