29 Oct 2025, 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm
Dunedin City Library, 230 Moray Place, Central Dunedin, Dunedin 9054, New Zealand
Historian David Murray discusses the chequered history and colourful characters associated with the Angus Motors building in Princes St.
The story of the Angus Motors Building in Princes Street begins with a massive fire in 1874 and the construction of its oldest portion as the Spanish Hotel.
The talk will explore personalities associated with its early years, including proprietors Olegario Guardiola and Albert and Jane Leung Chung, and resident poet Thomas Bracken.
Part of the building was erected for the Bell Tea factory and in the 1930s the site was radically transformed for the motor trade.
