View the magnificent photographic panorama of central Dunedin from 1865 - a fascinating glimpse into the past.
The panorama includes a key identifying various buildings, helping viewers orient themselves in relation to today’s cityscape.
The panorama was taken by professional photographer William Meluish in December 1864 or January 1865. He stood on the roof of Mrs Amelia Muir’s well-known boarding premises Bedford House on Bell Hill. Meluish had been taking views of Dunedin’s main street looking north and south every December since 1860. This was his most ambitious effort yet. He produced a print some two metres long and exhibited it at the 1865 New Zealand Exhibition, held in the building in Great King Street that can be seen in the panorama.
