A guided tour of 'Linden', one of City Rise’s grand Victorian houses, focusing on recent restoration work.

Built in 1878 Linden was designed by local Dunedin architects Mason & Wales for the Isaacs family. It was later sold to Richard Hudson of Cadbury’s fame, and the house is now owned by the Dhargyey Buddhist Centre.

It comprises 15 rooms with many of the original features still intact, and is a listed category 1 house. The exterior walls are plastered triple brick with quoins, the foundations are built of stone from the Leigh Valley and the roof is of Welsh slate. The name Linden comes from the Michaelis family home in Melbourne. Mrs Isaacs was a daughter of that family, and there are similarities of design in the beautiful wooden decoration on the upstairs veranda.

Linden is one of Dunedin’s grander houses and an important part of the group of Victorian houses in the Pitt Street, Royal Terrace precinct.
