But while crowds marvelled at wonders of progress, whispers of tuberculosis, the era’s “consumption”  haunted daily life. In the city’s underground bars, remedies, indulgences, and secrets flowed side by side. When a body surfaces, questions arise. Was this tragedy born of desperation, indulgence, or something far more sinister?
