William Mathew Hodgkins and the history of the Otago Art Society – 150 years and counting

Speaker: Doug Hart

William Mathew Hodgkins (1833-1898) was a pioneering New Zealand landscape painter and a key figure in Dunedin’s early art scene. He not only founded the Otago Art Society in 1876, but he also altered the perception of the importance of Art throughout the country. He fostered local talent and encouraged his daughter, Frances, to become a world renowned artist. Both father and daughter’s legacy and heritage are of profound importance to Otago.
