The Southern Heritage Trust was set up in December 2002 and incorporated as a Charitable Trust in May 2003. We have an attractive base in the Sexton’s Cottage at Dunedin’s Northern Cemetery. This is by arrangement with the Dunedin City Council, and in return we maintain an information centre and website on burials in the cemetery. You are most welcome to call in to the Sexton’s Cottage whenever you can find us open: you can view there a display of our heritage products and make purchases if you wish.

The Southern Heritage Trust is devoted to the appreciation and protection of Otago’s social, cultural, architectural and industrial heritage. In particular

  • we research and publish heritage materials
  • we set up and maintain heritage websites
  • we collaborate with other agencies, groups and individuals in heritage activities
  • we take upon ourselves an advocacy role in heritage matters.
  • we run a programme of heritage events, some public, others for members and invited guests

VISIONS FOR DUNEDIN: OUR HERITAGE, OUR FUTURE and AGM.

TUESDAY 21 JULY |5.30 pm |4th Floor | City Library | Free

WHAT I WOULD DO IF I HAD FOUR MILLION DOLLARS: THE DUNEDIN ATHENAEUM AND MECHANIC INSTITUTE.

In partnership with the Southern Heritage Trust, Dunedin Public Libraries is pleased to host a series of inspirational talks throughout the year, exploring visions of Dunedin’s past, present, and perhaps more importantly its future.

PRESENTED BY: Laurie Forbes, ZealSteel founder and staunch advocate for preserving Dunedin’s built heritage.

The Dunedin Athenaeum was 150 years old in May. It once played a very significant part in the educational and social structure of the city and it still houses a small members-only library and a theatre space. But a large part of the building lies neglected and unused. Laurie Forbes, well known for his work on the restoration of several of Dunedin’s historic buildings, outlines his vision for the future of the Athenaeum.

The talk will be preceded by light refreshments and the Southern Heritage Trust’s short AGM.
