The burial records of the cemetery are available for inspection, and there are exhibits outlining the history of the cemetery and the lives of some well-known Dunedin identities buried here, including William Larnach, Thomas Bracken, and Thomas Hocken.

Information brochures containing guides to sites of particular interest in the Northern Cemetery may be bought at the Sexton's Cottage. At present the series consists of seven brochures, each on a different theme:

  • Tragedy Trail- an assortment of victims, heroes and villains
  • Angel Walk - monuments featuring the image of an angel
  • Nine Portraits - the graves of nine people who won renown in the world of art
  • Maids, Mistresses and Murderesses - some of the more notable women buried here
  • Gentlemen of Fortune - enterprising men who played a part in founding Dunedin
  • Anzac Trail – the memorials of sixteen young soldiers who died in the Gallipoli campaign
  • Memorial Roses – best New Zealand example of original memorial plantings

The guide to 'The Roses of the Northern Cemetery' produced by the Otago Branch of Heritage Roses New Zealand Inc. is available at a cost of five dollars (proceeds benefit Heritage Roses NZ).

Dunedin Gasworks Museum

"The Dunedin Gas Works Museum is one of only three preserved gasworks in the world, and by far the best and most complete", says Sir Neil Cossons, former Chairman of English Heritage and a noted authority on the history of industrial archaeology, museums and conservation. The Dunedin Gasworks Museum is important as the only surviving and preserved example of a city gasworks where the process is explained and the equipment demonstrated.
